During 2008/9, Metronet Rail carried out major stabilisation works on railway cuttings in the Hillingdon area of London. These essential improvements ensured the railway’s long-term safety and stability. One key challenge involved a bungalow located next to the crest of a cutting. To protect the property and maintain safe access, engineers implemented a buttressing solution. Additionally, they planned a fenced walkway linking the bungalow to the railway below.

Choosing RamWall for Stabilisation

The space between the property and the cutting’s edge at Hillingdon Railway was extremely restricted. Therefore, engineers selected a RamWall solution due to its versatility, durability, and ease of construction. This system efficiently stabilised the area while enabling safe walkway installation.

Integrating the Walkway and Staircase

To facilitate smooth access, the RamWall structure at Hillingdon Railway incorporated a flight of steps. These seamlessly integrated with a separately constructed stairway descending the cutting’s face. Engineers achieved this by adjusting the stagger of the RamWall layers. This process demonstrated the system’s adaptability in complex site conditions.

Ensuring Long-Term Durability

Longevity was a primary concern for Hillingdon Railway. Therefore, engineers used stainless steel components in the structure, walkway, and staircase. This selection ensured the required 120-year design life. Additionally, it enhanced the infrastructure’s resilience against environmental factors. As a result, maintenance needs decreased, ensuring long-term stability.

The Impact of the Stabilisation Project

The Hillingdon Railway stabilisation project demonstrates the importance of innovative solutions like RamWall. By integrating modern construction techniques, engineers successfully safeguarded both the railway and the adjacent property. Furthermore, they maintained accessibility for future maintenance needs.
