DESIGNER: NCD International Ltd
PURPOSE: Retaining toe walls along re-graded embankments
RAMWALL TYPE: Plain steel to BS standard A142 (6mm) RAMWALL mesh plus 3mm diameter, 50mm x 50mm facing mesh, 25mm rebar spikes
RAMWALL FILL: Hardcore
The National Coal Mining Museum for England Trust commissioned NCD International to design and supply an anchored RAMWALL retaining wall to form the 8-metre high tunnel portal headwall required to reclaim an area of ground above the existing tunnel connecting their popular railway attraction linking the two halves of the site across a busy road. The reclaimed land will allow the extension of the car park and equipment storage area and secure the tunnel for the long term.
The RAMWALL is anchored back into the compacted fill using fibreglass ground anchors up to 6 m in length. The anchor heads are fixed and concealed within the steel matrix of the RAMWALL.
Construction was completed within 2 weeks utilising only the mining staff resident at the museum with limited supervision by NCD International’s engineers.
The railway and tunnel will be in full operation in the spring of 2010.
